IMG_20210401_123424_024.jpg

Last chance to view Prisca’s installation! The Newsstand will be open Fri April 2nd, from 7-9ish pm. Come by,… you may hear some old-school tunes brought to us by YiuYiu. Be cool, wear a mask!

“Newsstand Lantern” by Prisca Choe is a freestanding installation inspired by the resilience of Chinatown elders during the pandemic. It features monstera and chrysanthemums, which symbolize longevity, good luck, healing and respect for elders. When it gets dark out, the light shining from the newsstand is meant to remind us that, in times of hardship, we can look to our community to provide comfort and healing. This installation is inspired by and dedicated to Corky Lee.

Prisca Choe is a production designer and visual artist whose work centers her community by holding space to acknowledge and heal the trauma of intersectional erasure. Through craft, film, and photography, she celebrates the hybrid of Eastern and Western methods of identity formation, healing, and storytelling cultivated in the Asian diaspora. In addition to her visual projects, she works as a community organizer of Asian Womxn in the Arts to create spaces that center womxn and LGBTQ+ creatives and cultural workers from the Asian diaspora. Prisca currently lives in Chinatown, around the corner from her installation.
