To celebrate the Lantern Festival, Think!Chinatown will activate “Newsstand Lantern” by artist Prisca Choe and “We the Lantern” by Rose Wong. Come find us on Mosco at Mott Street.
“Newsstand Lantern” by Prisca Choe
“Newsstand Lantern” is a freestanding installation inspired by the resilience of Chinatown elders during the pandemic. It features monstera and chrysanthemums, which symbolize longevity, good luck, healing and respect for elders. When it gets dark out, the light shining from the newsstand is meant to remind us that, in times of hardship, we can look to their community to provide comfort and healing. This installation is inspired by and dedicated to Corky Lee.
“We The Lantern” by Rose Wong
“We The Lantern” is a wearable lantern art piece. Each piece of fabric features illustrations showcasing the neighborhood’s efforts, care and resilience since the pandemic. Imagery includes people, storefronts, mutual aid efforts, Chinese New Year iconography and more, while highlighting various scenes of life in Chinatown throughout this time. By donning the art piece, we are celebrating all of ourselves as a source of strength and light within the community.
