In this workshop, our Storytelling Lead and Chinatown Records DJ historian Rochelle Kwan will give us a peek into her deeply personal process of listening and storytelling with her family and neighbors. We’ll explore the ways that stories can happen all around us and how we can get started with our loved ones right in our own living rooms at home.
We’ll walk away with how we can:
Tune into the everyday stories all around us
Start getting to know our loved ones and facilitate meaningful conversations
Work with what we have to record our own stories
Activate these stories to co-create art together
Free with RSVP required!
Just like we learn to tune the dial just right on the radio, we’ll walk away with the skills to tune in to, record, and celebrate the stories all around us, with the people we love.
Chinatown Records is a homegrown community effort to celebrate the richness of music, memory, and history that comes with inherited family collections. Rooted in deep listening, Chinatown Records imagines music as a familiar entrypoint and bridge for opening up conversation, sparking memories, and building connections across generations – starting right here at home with our loved ones. Spanning across Chinatown block parties, sonic family histories, living room listenings, and endless learning with family and neighbors, Chinatown Records 華埠錄音 is an ever-growing record of the people we love, who bring all this music back to life with us.
