Join us for the opening of a brand new art exhibition curated by Sophia Ma, “Between Line and Thread: Connecting the Asian American Arts Centre Collection” at Think!Chinatown’s Studio. “Between Line and Thread” uses the literal lines, threads, and metaphorical representations of connection in the works of the Asian American Arts Centre (AAAC) collection to explore the web between the works, artists, and organizations that made this exhibition possible. Free with no RSVP required!

About the Exhibit

“Between Line and Thread” uses the literal lines, threads, and metaphorical representations of connection in the works of the Asian American Arts Centre (AAAC) collection to explore the web between the works, artists, and organizations that made this exhibition possible. By stripping the works down to their core elements–line, thread, wire, rope, marks, and even text, the ahistorical aesthetic framework reveals that the visually differing forms contain an unseen link that investigates the past as their visual supplier. That shared starting point is one of AAAC’s guiding collecting principles. Developed outside of academia or museum guidelines, the AAAC collection provides an education of Asian American humanities through the arts that center on accessibility for the general public, which Think!Chinatown honors as its new steward.

Sophia Ma is an independent curator and writer. The most recent project Ma completed in August 2023 was "Gathering", a two-location exhibition of forty-five members of Asianish, an informal artist and cultural producers collective of Asian descent, where she was a co-grantee of the Asian Women Giving Circle grant and the Brooklyn Arts Fund with Cecile Chong. Ma currently works for M+ American Friends Foundation as their Programs and Members Manager, connecting audiences in the US to the work of M+ through programming and events.
