Join Sisters in Self Defense in the T!C studio for a hands-on workshop where you’ll learn techniques for protecting yourself and others from racially motivated aggression in public spaces. Participants will gain practical knowledge about what actually happens in a street altercation, how to avoid dangerous situations and de-escalate conflict, and, if no other option is available, how to move against an attacker. Sometimes when we are in the presence of danger, our bodies naturally produce what is called a “freeze” response. We will talk about how recognize this and train ourselves to circumvent it, or as Bruce Lee said, “Be like water.” All who attend will be invited to share their experiences and questions with the instructors. Free with RSVP required.

This class is open to all ages and no prior experience with martial arts is required. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing that allows free movement. Seating will be provided for all who need it. There will be some participation, movement, and breath exercises; however, the primary focus will be to understand ourselves better through conversation. Those who would like to talk more after class or who are not able to attend a group class are welcome to come to office hours to speak with the instructor one-on-one.

Instruction will be in English and handouts will be available in English, Chinese, Arabic, Bengali, Burmese, Hindi, Japanese, Karen, Korean, Nepali, Tagalog, Thai, Urdu, and Vietnamese. Please contact yoursisterinselfdefense@gmail.com if you or someone you are bringing to class requires a language accommodation.

When registering please keep in mind that this class is created for Asian American and BIPOC participants.

Sisters in Self-Defense was formed by author Ava Chin and artist Alison Kuo in March of 2021, in response to the anti-Asian attacks on our community. Our aim is to provide not only self-defense instruction for women, queer identifying folx, and elders in our community, but also a space for folks to share their concerns and fears, as well as resources and information.
