Chinatown Arts Week: Garden Preview 花園音樂會

  • Elizabeth Street Garden Spring & Prince Street New York, NY United States (map)

Join us for a magical evening at Elizabeth Street Garden of opera and strings. Meemee Chin will perform a selection of Cantonese opera arias, accompanied by guzheng musician, Elaine Ho. So Kuen will join as the sheng/male role in a duet. We'll also enjoy erhu solo from Andy Lin.

String ensemble INTERWOVEN will perform arrangements of beloved Chinese/Taiwanese folk songs. The program will also include a few movements of a Mozart string quartet, the slow movement of which has a lovely, aria-like quality, and conclude with “The Wildlife Suite”, a compilation of two popular erhu tunes by Liu Tianhua and Chen Yaoxing, evoking bird calls and the neighing of horses.

MeeMee Chin 陳美美 began her Cantonese Opera journey in 2004 as a way to support the oldest Opera Club in Chinatown, Manchee Benevolent Association. At first it was something for her to fill her Saturdays - it soon became a deep passion as she found her voice!

Wei-Yang 林維洋  Andy Lin is a Taiwanese born violist and erhuist. He is the artistic director and co-founder of the New Asia Chamber Music Society and holds his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The Juilliard School and his Doctor’s degree in Musical Arts from SUNY Stony Brook.

INTERWOVEN is a string ensemble whose mission is to integrate the sounds of traditional Asian music and Western Classical music. The ensemble was created by Grammy-winning violinist Keiko Tokunaga in reaction to the social climate change surrounding the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in 2021. By exploring the historic soundscapes of the Eastern and Western musical traditions, INTERWOVEN aims to bridge the gap between the two cultures and to find ways to inspire new collaborations.

This event is free, but if you can, please donate so that we can continue to provide free programming to the community
