Chinatown Arts Week is now Chinatown Arts Festival
A look back to Chinatown Arts Week 2021: Opened with our final Chinatown Nights of the year. This T!C nightmarket featured art and food vendors along with a performance of bilingual fresh takes on Chinese folk songs by saxophonist and vocalist Stephanie Chou. Later in the week, Ling Tang and the Ba Ban Chinese Music Society who performed a live storefront art installation involving dance, paper cutting and a compelling blend of traditional and contemporary Chinese music. Selections from the Asian American Art Centre’s pioneering collection were on view in two exhibition spaces. Over in Columbus Park, we revealed a large-scale yarn mural bloomed from over 2000 flowers lovingly made by the community, artists, and organizers. Want to give the arts a try for yourself? Experiment with movement at our Chinese dance and taichi workshops.
Chinatown Arts Week is a festival celebrating the cultural richness of Manhattan’s Chinatown. Led by festival curators, Yin Kong & Amy Chin, T!C has produced several cultural events throughout the week, all of them are free to the public. By presenting grassroots Chinatown artists and emerging Asian American artists in context of each other, we hope to bring the generations together and connect with a wider arts audience. ChAW also highlights cultural happenings presented by our neighbors to increase awareness of Chinatown’s cultural assets. Beyond this week, we hope that visitors and neighbors alike will recognize and engage more in Chinatown’s cultural offerings. Look out for ChAW next October!
